The previous volume (Research Ethics) covered how to protect participants in research on human beings. This volume takes up the stage of bringing that research's findings into the world — the ethics surrounding the publication of papers.
The correctness of research is ultimately upheld by being published as a paper and verified by other researchers. That is why "who wrote it," "did they write honestly," "was it reviewed fairly" are at issue. Publication ethics was not forced from outside by law; it is a "conscience mechanism" the academic community grew to protect its own trust. This volume traces what is inside that mechanism, and what happens when it is broken.
02Authorship — what it means to "be an author"
A paper's author line is an honor and, at the same time, the locus of responsibility. Who may be an author? The International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) has organized the criteria — substantial contribution to the work, involvement in drafting or revising the manuscript, approval of the final version, and accountability for the work as a whole.
Two deviations become the problem here. Gift authorship (adding an influential figure who did not contribute) and ghost authorship (hiding the person who actually wrote it — for instance, a writer hired by a company). Ghostwriting in particular has been a serious problem in the pharmaceutical industry. A renowned physician lends only a name to a manuscript the company wrote, and readers believe it to be the paper of a neutral expert.
03Research misconduct — the three types known as FFP
The misconduct that destroys the honesty of research is organized internationally into three, FFP.

These are not mere rule violations. They are acts that destroy the very enterprise of science from the inside. Because science advances by "trusting another's report and building on top of it." If the foundation is false, the research built upon it — and the treatment given to patients who believed it — all become precarious.
04Peer review, and its limits
Before publication, a paper is reviewed by researchers in the same field — peer review. It is a mechanism for sifting out, before publication, obvious errors and weak logic. But peer review is not all-powerful. A reviewer cannot necessarily see through whether submitted data are fabricated. They have only the manuscript in hand; they do not reproduce the raw data or the experiment itself.
That is why publication ethics rests on multiple layers: the author's honesty, the reviewer's scrutiny, the editor's judgment, and verification by the whole scientific community after publication. Passing peer review is not "proof of correctness" but only "passing a minimal sieve" — an understanding the reader of a paper also needs.
05Retraction — the mechanism to correct error publicly
When an error or misconduct comes to light afterward, science has the means of retraction. Retraction is an act that publicly declares the paper's conclusions "must no longer be a basis for trust." Bodies such as the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) have built the criteria and procedures for retraction.
Retraction is especially grave in medicine. If a retracted paper's conclusions had already influenced clinical care or policy, correction is not easy. Once a single erroneous paper has gone out and been believed, harm remains even after retraction. That is why honesty and review before publication matter above all. Retraction is the last safety device, not the first line of defense.
06Connection to pharma practice — between promotion and "evidence"
Publication ethics ties directly to the pharma front line, because the "papers" and "evidence" that promotional materials cite stand on the foundation of publication ethics.
- Ghostwriting — if a company-prepared manuscript is dressed up as a neutral paper, all the promotion that cites it loses its trust
- Selective publication (publication bias) — if unfavorable trial results are not published and only favorable ones are turned into papers, the entire body of evidence is distorted
- Disclosure of conflicts of interest (COI) — honestly showing who funded the research underpins the reader's proper judgment
These were the very points at issue in the Vioxx case. "Was this evidence created honestly and published honestly?" — knowing publication ethics ties directly to training the eye that, in material review and information provision, sees through the trustworthiness of a citation.

The eye that asks "was this evidence created honestly?" begins with knowing publication ethics. Trust stands only on the accumulation of plain disciplines — writing honestly, and publishing honestly.
