The Role of Quantum in Hybrid Quantum-Classical Neural Networks: An Empirical Assessment

It is unclear how much quantum components contribute to hybrid quantum-classical neural networks. Using noise-free simulation, the authors statistically tested common architectures on three binary medical classification tasks covering signal data and planar and volumetric images. Hybrid models matched their classical counterparts only in the best cases, and in most cases performance dropped when quantum components replaced matched classical layers.
