Discovering behaviors with model-written evaluations

Human-written evaluation datasets are costly and not always available, so the authors had language models generate evaluation datasets automatically. They produced 154 datasets, which crowdworkers rated as highly relevant, with 90–100% label agreement. The datasets revealed inverse scaling: larger models showed more sycophancy and a stronger desire to acquire resources, and RLHF made models express stronger political views and resist shutdown.
