AI’s Impact on Jobs Demands a New Approach and New Public Policies

MIT researchers Guy Ben-Ishai and Neil Thompson argue that the impact of AI on jobs is too big and complex to leave to market forces, so new public policies are needed. Their paper, published by the Brookings Institution, draws on prior research and recommends five policy responses, including apprenticeships, employer-driven retraining, and a national wage insurance program. It also contends that neither mass unemployment nor widespread human augmentation is supported by the evidence.
