Why Proprietary AI Leads Over Open AI Models

MIT IDE Digital Fellow Irving Wladawsky-Berger examines, in a recent blog post, why open-source AI models lag behind closed models in adoption. Drawing on research by IDE Research Scientist and Microsoft Chief Economist Frank Nagle, he offers his own theory of why proprietary models dominate today and where the technology is heading. Separately, reports of an August White House meeting with leading AI companies say that proposed regulations would cover only proprietary models deemed a national security threat, excluding open-source and open-weight models.
