Can AI automate Epoch?
Epoch AI gave six models real tasks from its own work and graded the outputs manually against its own standards. Frontier models such as Claude Fable 5.1 and GPT-6 Astra handle well-defined tasks reliably but fail at open-ended parts, so they still fall short of automating Epoch's work. Open-weight models lag further behind, and all models struggle with implicit conventions and with judging which research directions to pursue.
