Many Chinese AI labs have developed large pre-trained models capable of generating coherent text, realistic images, and video, yet there has been little in-depth English-language analysis of them. This review examines a sample of 26 such models, describing their general capabilities and the role of collaboration among government, industry, and academia in supporting them. It also covers Chinese discussions on techno-nationalism, AI governance, and ethics.
