This paper proposes assigning identifiers (IDs) to individual AI system instances, such as a particular chat session, with associated information accessible to parties interacting with the system. It examines the characteristics of such IDs, their potential uses, demand and adoption incentives, an implementation for deployers, and their limitations and risks. The authors argue IDs seem most warranted where AI systems could have a large impact, such as in financial transactions or contacting real people.
