Machine Learning Assisted Design of Complex and High Entropy Alloys by Hybrid HiPIMS/Pulsed-DC PVD Process for Low Carbon Energy Applications in Extreme Environments

Complex and high entropy alloys resist harsh environments, but making them as bulk or thin films by trial and error is impractical because of their complexity. The French DIADEM initiative uses DIADEM-2D, an AI-driven hybrid HiPIMS/pulsed-DC PVD process with four cathodes in a confocal combinatorial configuration, to develop coatings for carbon-free energy uses such as nuclear and high temperature electrolysis. High entropy alloys were determined from literature data on corrosion resistance in molten salt and nuclear accident conditions, and an element-independent model linking deposition parameters to coating properties enabled protective coating design for specific compositions, demonstrating the process's feasibility and accuracy.
