MIT researchers developed a multimodal AI model that combines 3D atomic structures with natural language descriptions, and that can identify optimal crystalline materials for various applications. The model generates rich descriptions of crystal structures from experimental papers and first-principles computational databases, covering composition, structure, properties, and processing considerations. It addresses two problems: crystal structures are stored in formats that language models are not trained on, and the experimental literature is biased toward a few popular crystal classes.
